Quality Control Protocols for Advanced Light Microscopes (wide-field fluorescence, confocal and spinning disk LSMs)

Section: Professional Skills
Type: Doctoral Development Programme
Date: 19 May 2025, 09:00
Venue: CIGL seminar room, Aulweg 132, 35392 Gießen
Description: Quality control (QC) in light microscopy is not just a good practice; it is essential for generating reliable, reproducible, and high-quality scientific data. It ensures optimal performance and longevity of expensive instruments while facilitating effective collaboration within the scientific community.

This workshop provides a comprehensive overview of essential quality control procedures for high-end wide-field fluorescence, confocal, and spinning disk microscopy systems. These advanced imaging instruments are crucial for cutting-edge biological research, demanding optimal and consistent performance. This session will equip participants with the knowledge and practical strategies to proactively monitor their microscope systems’ performance, ensuring reliable and reproducible data acquisition.

We will cover critical QC parameters relevant to each microscope type, including illumination stability and alignment, laser power and profile, detector sensitivity and linearity, spatial calibration and accuracy, filter performance, and overall system stability. Through a combination of theoretical background and practical examples, participants will learn how to identify potential issues, implement routine QC checks using readily available tools and standards, and troubleshoot common problems effectively.
